Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day we reflected on the challenges and trials of Sarah and Abraham in the Book of Genesis. Their story is scattered with both disappointment and divine promises. After many years of waiting for a promised heir, Sarah took matters into her own hands and arranged for Abraham to have a child with her maid-servant, Hagar. This decision resulted in strife and heartache not only for them, but for generations to come, highlighting the complications that can arise when we do things our own way without including God. Despite our personal failings, God can turn our disappointments into divine fulfillment, illuminating his unfailing love and the promises He holds for us all.

1. In Genesis 11:29-31, how do Abraham and Sarah’s experiences of unmet expectations relate to our own disappointments? Discuss a time when you faced a similar feeling of unmet expectations.
