Holy Burden – Part 1
Introduction

Following Jesus involves more than simply believing the right things. It is about allowing His heart to shape ours. This week, Pastor Jess Burke from Crossway Oak City reminded us that while Jesus invites us to lay down burdens we were never meant to carry, He also calls us to carry what she described as a ‘holy burden’: a God-given compassion that moves us to prayer, obedience, and action. As we spend time in Scripture together, let’s ask God to help us discern what He is inviting us to care deeply about, and respond with a willing ‘yes.’

Read:
Exodus 3:7–12, Matthew 11:28–30, Matthew 16:24–26, Luke 19:41–44

Discuss
  1. Pastor Jess described a holy burden as something God places on our hearts that reflects His love and concern for people. Looking at Exodus 3:7–12, what stands out to you about God’s heart before He calls Moses? What does this teach us about where our calling begins?
  2. Read Matthew 11:28–30, 16:24–26. Jesus invites us to lay down burdens that aren’t ours to carry, yet also calls us to deny ourselves and follow Him. How do we discern the difference between unhealthy burdens and God-given burdens?
  3. Jess challenged us to consider whether comfort or convenience has quietly become our default. In what ways can comfort keep us from saying ‘yes’ to what God is asking? What helps you remain available when obedience becomes costly?
  4. Read Exodus 3:11–12. Moses immediately focused on his inadequacy, but God’s response was simply, “I will be with you.” Which of your own excuses or fears do you relate to most? How does God’s promise reshape the way you see them?
  5. Read Luke 19:41–44. Jesus looked at Jerusalem and wept because His heart reflected the Father’s compassion for people. What do you think it means to develop God’s heart for the people and places He has already placed around us?
  6. Jess encouraged us not simply to admire God’s mission from the sidelines, but to step into it. Is there a person, place, or ministry where you sense God may be stirring a fresh or renewed burden in your heart? As a Life Group, how can you encourage and pray for one another to take a faithful next step?

Who’s Your Person of Peace?
A holy burden often begins with one person rather than a crowd. As you pray this week, ask God to reveal someone whose heart He is already preparing. Pray that He would give you His compassion for them, the courage to step toward them, and the wisdom to know how to love them well.

Respond

This week, ask God: “What burden do You want me to carry, and what burden do I need to lay down?” Choose one practical step of obedience. Perhaps it’s praying consistently for someone, starting a conversation, serving where God is prompting you, or saying ‘yes’ to an assignment you’ve been resisting.
