Father’s Day is an opportunity to appreciate Dads and men. It’s a time to have a laugh and perhaps get together over a roast dinner or a special breakfast. If we are not careful we can miss the opportunity to pray for, spend time and acknowledge the positive influence of the men in our lives. Not all of us are or will be biological parents; our reading today is written by Paul to ‘his dear son’ Timothy. Although Timothy is not his biological son, Paul invests into his life.

Discuss

1. Paul reminds Timothy to ‘fan into flame the gift of God’. Do you have someone you encourage in their faith? What does your encouragement mean to them?
2. Have there been hardships you have helped others through? Have you prayed with them and for them? How could you do so in the future?
3. Paul reminds Timothy of the faith he has received from his mother and grandmother, and of the heritage that has been passed through the generations. Consider how you might encourage those in whom you are investing to pray for and help others. Share some ways you may do this.
4. Share ways you have helped another grow in intimacy with God. How did it go? What would you do again? What would you change?

Respond

The privilege of investing in other people is something Jesus modelled for us and something Paul has given us insight into through his letters. Consider who God has put in your life, who has asked for your opinions, who listens to what you say, and even does it. These are people of peace to you. God has put them in your life for you to pray for, invest in and encourage. Pray and ask God about inviting this person or people to read the Bible with you.
